.... and is predicted to increase to 131.5 million people by 2050. Every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia. With such astounding figures, more awareness needs to be raised about this insidious disease. My mother was diagnosed with dementia in 2013 and whilst there is an enormous amount of information about dementia, I struggled to relate. Nothing appeared to be a firsthand account of what it was like with a parent with dementia, maybe because everyone’s experience is different.
The longest goodbye covers the highs and lows of a mother and daughter’s dementia journey, from diagnosis to aged care. It isn’t about having all the answers: it is about providing lessons learned from our own dementia journey, and assisting people to understand and communicate more effectively with their loved ones and most importantly, cherish every moment.
